2.3 Homeostasis

Homeostasis

What is Homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the process by which the body attempts to maintain a state of stable physiological balance. The body needs to maintain homeostasis in order to stay alive. If you take a psychoactive drug, your body may attempt to bring itself back into this physiologic balance, and this may create a rebound effect.

 Why is Homeostasis Important?

Homeostasis is important for maintenance of a constant internal environment. It helps enhance a dynamic equilibrium reach continuously for external change in a feedback control process that keep conditions relatively uniform.

Negative Feedback

Think about how a thermostat in an air-conditioning unit functions. when the temperature of a room rises above the set temperature, the unit will automatically release more cool air into the surroundings.
